Get Involved & Support the Lincolnshire Refugee Doctor Project

To be able to comfortably study medical English, with a view to passing the Occupational English Test (OET), doctors should ideally be at least a mid-B2, or ESOL Entry Level 3 level of English and will work towards a C1 level in order to meet the minimum score of B in the OET exam.

Some LRDP members need extra help with their general English skills, to work towards achieving the required proficiencies recommended for the exam.

English Language Volunteers work with these doctors and help them to improve their general English, on a 1-2-1 or small group basis.  This is conducted usually online, but there may be some opportunities for face-to-face sessions.

There is also the opportunity for LRDP volunteers to take part in the OET Preparation Provider training programme – which could lead to a career teaching this high-stake exam. Experience of teaching English as a second language is desirable, but not essential.

Where appropriate and dependant on local housing and employment opportunities, LRDP can help support programme members and their families to relocate to the areas we cover.  As part of this, social mentors will provide mentees with social support that promotes their success on the LRDP Programme. While clinical guidance and support will be provided by medically trained practitioners, the role of a social mentor is to be a source of wider local and regional information and guidance, sharing knowledge of local services and activities, and playing an important role in supporting integration within the local community.
